My research mainly revolves on stream biofilm communities. ![]() I use multiple taxonomic (macroinvertebrates, algae, bryophytes and bacteria) and functional measures (primary production, decomposition, microbial metabolism) to achieve a wider understanding of the interactions between streams and riparian forests. I aim to understand forestry (logging, land drainage) impacts on the structure and functioning of boreal stream and riparian ecosystems. I’m also investigating the downstream effects of upper catchment peatland drainage on stream macroinvertebrate and bryophyte communities and ecosystem functioning (decomposition and primary production). In my PhD-project I study the impacts of forest clear cutting on stream and riparian biodiversity, functioning and energy transfer between stream and riparian forest using multiple taxonomic and functional variables. I am testing the responses from microbes and macroinvertebrates, while also measuring primary production and decomposition. ![]() To do this, I am analysing samples from a set of natural streams with different levels of dissolved organic carbon content, as well as samples from a mesocosm experiment where drought and brownification were simulated. My work aims to elucidate how increased levels of dissolved organic carbon (brownification) and climate change (drought) affect the structure and functioning of stream communities.
